Book Review: Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan (Manga edition)

Dark Hunger by Christine Feehan. © 2007 Berkley. ISBN 9780425217832. Trade Paperback. Manga/Graphic Novel. 208 pages. Source: copy was purchased by me from a thrift store

Synopsis: Riordan is an immortal Carpathian male, trapped and caged, his honor compromised by his captors. They’re in his mind. They’re in his blood. And not one can withstand his desire for revenge.

Juliette is an activist devoted to liberating animals from a secret jungle lab. What she stumbles upon is a prisoner like no other. She will release him from his bonds. He will release her from her inhibitions.

Review: I came across this book while I was living in Tennessee a few months ago and decided to give these immortal alpha-males another chance. I’ve had lots going on for the last few months and haven’t gotten around to reading this until now (having your power knocked out leaves you with lots of time…). Needless to say, I just can’t get into the Carpathian stories even in graphic novel format. I really can’t even articulate what it is about them I don’t like but something about them rubs me the wrong (high possibility of the whole “Me Tazan, You Jane, You now belong to me” feel to them) way so this will be my last attempt. However, I’m not bumping Feehan off my radar just yet. I have another title of hers, Hidden Currents, and I’ll wait to see how that goes first. 2/5. Read more

Book Review: Club Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, #3) by Charlaine Harris

Club Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, #3) by Charlaine Harris. © 2003 Ace Books. ISBN 9780441010516. Mass Market Paperback. Paranormal Romance/Mystery. 292 pages. Source: borrowed a copy from my sister.

Synopsis: There’s only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with (at least voluntarily) and that’s Bill. But recently he’s been a little distant – in another state, distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him. Next thing Sookie knows, she is off to Jackson, Mississippi to mingle with the under-underworld at Club Dead. It’s a dangerous little haunt where the elitist vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some type O. But when Sookie finally finds Bill – caught in an act of serious betrayal – she’s not sure whether to save him…or sharpen some stakes.

Review: In my attempt to get some background info while waiting impatiently for the new season of True Blood, I borrowed a couple of the Sookie Stackhouse novels from my little sister.

In this book, Bill takes a trip to Jackson, MS (though he told Sookie it was Seattle) and ends up being held hostage by Mississippi’s vampire king, Russell Edgington and the mysterious Lorena. As Sherriff of Louisiana’s Area 5, Eric is duty-bound to get Bill back but once again needs Sookie’s telepathic abilities in order to do so. Eric charges werewolf Alcide Herveaux with the job of escorting Sookie to Jackson, where both must masquerade as a couple in order to learn more from the patrons of Josephine’s (a.k.a., Club Dead). As you can expect, danger and mystery find Sookie and the shit hits the fan when Bill betrays her.  Read more

31 Days of Halloween { review } No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon

No Mercy (Dark-Hunter Series #19 / Were-Hunter #6) by Sherrilyn Kenyon. © 2010 St. Martin’s Press. ISBN 9780312546564. Hardback. Paranormal Romance. 352 pages. $24.99 US. Source: Amazon Purchase.

Synopsis: Live fast, fight hard and, if you have to die, then take as many of your enemies with you as you can. That is the Amazon credo and it was one Samia lived and died by. Now in contemporary New Orleans, the immortal Amazon warrior is about to learn that there’s a worse evil coming to slaughter mankind than she’s ever faced before.

Shape-shifter Dev Peltier has stood guard at the front of Sanctuary for almost two hundred years and in that time, he’s seen it all. Or so he thought. Now their enemies have discovered a new source of power–one that makes a mockery of anything faced to date.

The war is on and Dev and Sam are guarding ground zero. But in order to win, they will have to break the most cardinal of all rules and pray it doesn’t unravel the universe, as we know it.

Review: After Acheron’s much-awaited story a lot of the fans of the Dark-Hunters series thought that was it. She can’t possibly come up with a bigger picture story line to go with the romances and things could only go down hill from there, but with every book after that Sherrilyn Kenyon proved them wrong. Although, it took her two more books to tie loose ends from the Acheron story (which were good but not great) she is certainly back with this book.

The main story line in this book is of course the forbidden romance between a Dev and Sam and all the problems they go though with the people who want them dead. The other story line is the underlying war between the Dark-Hunters/Were-Hunters and the Daimon but in this book it is taken to a whole new level. A lot of new conflicts appear in this book giving hints to a new future conflict for Acheron.

Dark-Hunter fans are going to adore this book and will not think that the story is over by any means.

Review
I really liked this book, in fact I liked it so much I read it all in one sitting.  The way the author writes is very simple to follow and very engaging. You learn about the characters through, not just their interaction with each other, but with their interactions with their enemies and friends. The H/H are not in their own universe and are dependent on everyone around them though they don’t have to be. Read more

Book Review: Lion’s Heat by Lora Leigh (Breed Series #21)

Lion’s Heat (Breed Series #21) by Lora Leigh. © 2010 Berkley Sensation. ISBN 9780425233801. Paperback. Paranormal Romance. 342 pages. $7.99 US. Source: Amazon purchase.

Synopsis:
Bad boy Jonas Wyatt’s personal assistant, Rachel, has had a child; an innocent new life that has been put in grave danger because of Jonas’s perilous games and calculations played in the shadow-world in which he lives: the dark and sensual world of the Breeds. Now, Rachel is making only one demand of Jonas—that he finally take responsibility and deliver on the protection that only he can give.

Jonas has known for a long time that it is destiny that Rachel become his mate. He can sense it. He can also sense her reluctance. And for that, he refuses to claim her. He wants her on love alone and not because of the urge of the mating heat. But it is Jonas’s destiny to claim her. And he will have his way…

Review:
I waited for this book to come out because I REALLY loved the Breed series that Lora Leigh put together and the other books were spectacular.  This one, however, is a bit of a disappointment.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved the story, just not as Jonas’s story.  At the end of chapter two I decided to continue reading it as a Breed story rather than Jonas’s story and as such it did not disappoint.  I think the best way is to break it down and tell you why I gave it the marks I did.
