Seems like vampires are so common nowadays, if someone tells you they’re dating a vampire, you probably wouldn’t even blink an eye. And that’s not even on the page in a fiction novel. ;-) But seriously, the fanged ones have taken over the pages. Everywhere you look you see books with vampire in the title, and fangs slipping over his sensual thick lips (or hers), and the telltale bite marks on the heroine’s swanlike neck. But writers and publishers are mixing it up. Amidst the flock of vampires you’ll find angels, demons, werewolves, faeries, shapeshifters, even zombies. (But seriously? A zombie romance? Ugg.) And we like them all. Variety is the spice, and all that. But if I had to pick one particular ‘creature’ for a boyfriend, I’d go with the classic vampire.
You know what you’re getting with the vamp. Mostly. He’s going to be tall, dark and handsome, for sure. (Blonde and brawny is fine too.) He’ll probably be old—really old—but he won’t show his age. He’s going to be eternally young, and everything on him will stay young as well (heh). He may have an aversion to the sunlight and thus, only be able to take you out at night, but many vampires can do sunlight, so that’s not a deal-breaker. He’s not a big eater. You won’t be required to cook for him, (though he may start stocking your cupboards with curious bottles of dark red liquid). Naturally, he’s stylish. Not too many vamps get by without learning some fashion sense over the decades or centuries they’ve walked the earth. You’ll be proud to show him off.
One problem, though. Those pesky fangs. Well, you may or may not deem them pesky. Because that bite, oooooh, that bite. Now that’s an amazing thing. Erotic, sensual, capable of giving you an orgasm, even. Who can resist the bite? And fear not, some vamps won’t turn you into a vampire. They can if they want, but if he loves you, he’ll respect your wishes to remain mortal (if that’s your choice). But the fangs could present a problem a dinner party peopled with those less accepting of the fanged ones. They may startle at sight of your boyfriend’s pearly whites. Or even scream. Yes, well, it’s not fun unless there are a few screams. ;-)
So in comparison, you’ve not fur and shifting limbs to deal with (unless your vamp is a shapeshifter), nor have you to be sweeping up trails of faery dust all the time. Demons may have horns that’ll tear your bedsheets—and angels? Well, those wings! What to do with them?
So yes, give me a good ole vampire any day. Immortality, dark hair, a snappy dresser, and a devoted lover. Just keep your hands off his fangs. He’s mine.
