An Update

Hey all – it’s Courtney from Once Upon a Bookshelf here. Teresa’s asked me to stop by and let you all know what’s been going on.

Her grandfather recently had hip replacement surgery, and so she’s currently dealing with a family convalescence – all is well, but it is keeping her extremely busy. Due to this, over the next couple of weeks there’s going to be a shortage of posts. It also means that it will take longer than normal for her to reply to any emails that you send her.

Again, all is well, but it’s going to take some time for things calm down. She’ll be back soon.

Checking In

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to check in and let you all know why it’s been quiet around here lately. I’ve been sick and while I’ve managed to get out and do some things like work and take photos for my niece’s birthday, I haven’t had the energy for anything else.

I have been reading though so once I’m back to health, I’ll have lots of reviews for you guys (and also finally get around to announcing giveaway winners, sorry).

But right now, I’m going to finish heating up my soup, curl up on the sofa and finish watching The Virgin Queen. That is, if I don’t fall asleep…

Hope you guys understand *hugs you all*

Help Tornado Victims

Hey everyone. I just wanted to check in and let you all know that I live in one of the towns in AL hit by the brutal tornadoes. My family’s fine, having only got a brush from the tornado as it passed over the ridge in front of our house which caused it not to fully touch down, we just have a yard of debris and minor damage to vehicles. Right now we are just dealing with loss of power and water.

Unfortunately, half a mile down the road was not as lucky. There it looks like a nuclear bomb went off. Houses are absolutely demolished, lives lost and more. We went out this morning and helped clear trees where we could. I’m going to continue helping where I can and thus wanted to let you all know that because of that and our loss of power, it could be days before I am able to post on here again. I hope you all understand.

To help with relief efforts here in the south and midwest, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 or visit www.redcross.org

Thank you!

Think For Yourself and #SpeakLoudly

I have a hard time controlling what I say when it comes to hot political topics such as civil liberties, so instead of going off on an enraged tangent (and perhaps sparing myself from any libel I might commit against Scroggins for if I begin on a tirade I will not be held responsible for my actions, therefore I shall sustain entirely) in a post of my own, I’ll direct you to some amazing posts by my fellow bloggers with whom I agree wholeheartedly—

Aww, who am I kidding? I can’t NOT say something about this.

To those who support censorship: You undermine the civil liberties given to each citizen of the United States by the Constitution with your actions. Yes, you are entitled to your opinions and the right to raise your children how you see fit (the Constitution gives you those rights after all), however, you have no right to push your opinion onto the masses. Don’t like Speak, don’t want your kids to read Speak? Fine, don’t read it. But don’t try and take the right to read it from everyone else. And this goes to all you Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, Crank and etcetera haters as well. Your actions are un-American and un-Constitutional, and not to mention despicable.

Got a post on this subject? Link it in the comments and I will be glad to add it to the list.

Upcoming Reviews & Giveaway News

Yes, I still exist lol. Work was massively insane (as are most summer’s when you work at a library), but with the school season returning next week, I can begin to relax and get back to the blogging more often. In fact, here’s a pic of the reviews you have to look forward to this coming month»

Ghosts, Zombies and Vampies ... Oh my!

I’m also working on a great October/Halloween giveaway for our followers. I recently bought some books, received some extras from publishers and went through my ARC pile. But that’s not all, I have a great, spooky party game and a few other non-book related goodies, so stay tuned. Be sure to follow us either through Google Friend Connect or Networked Blogs (on the left sidebar) in order to qualify when giveaway time rolls around!

Virtual Advent Tour, Day 21

This post is part of the Virtual Advent Tour 2009.

The fog is thick and hugs close to the trees, giving everything an aura of blue-gray. A warm cuppa clasped in my hands does the duty of keeping me awake and focused on the task at hand: witnessing Grianstad an Gheimhridh (the winter solstice) sunrise.

As the dawn descends upon the world, the shade goes from blue-gray to pale gray. The sun has some time yet until it has pierced the horizon above the hilly land. Geese take their first flight of the morn and the crow speaks of the day, as my heart sings the praises of Grian, of my ancestors and of those fellow few who walk this path with me. Read more
