31 Days of Halloween { book review } The Goblin King (Shadowlands, #1) by Shona Husk

The Goblin King (Shadowlands, #1) by Shona Husk. © 2011 Sourcebooks Casablanca. ISBN 9781402259852. Mass Media Paperback. Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy. 352 pages. Source: ARC provided by the publisher.

Synopsis: Cursed by a Druid millennia ago, Roan lives a bleak existence in the Shadowlands, desperately trying to retain his soul and not succumb to the goblin horde. When a beautiful human summons him to grant a wish, he sees a glimmer of hope. But will she ever agree to be his queen?

Review: No doubt this title will immediately bring to mind thoughts of Labyrinth, but other than the title I think that’s about all that’s in common with the film. The Goblin King – the first in a paranormal romance trilogy by Shona Husk, that finally gives goblins their spotlight in this ever-growing genre — throw us into the midst of Roan’s life: one where his soul is hanging in the balance as the curse of being a goblin tugs at him at every moment and leaves him craving gold.  Read more

31 Days of Halloween { book review } Nephilim by Mary Ann Loesch

Nephilim by Mary Ann Loesch. © 2011 Lyrical Press, Inc. ISBN 9781616502935. eBook. Urban Fantasy. 191 pages.

Synopsis: Tattoo artist Nathan Ink is more than he seems. An angel living in secret on earth, he forces his clients to face their flaws by tattooing images of their sins on their bodies, but this glimpse into the soul often results in his clients’ deaths. Although Nathan avoids the other angels, when they ask him to keep an eye on Faye, a nephilim being stalked by another of her kind, he reluctantly agrees. The angels have kept Faye in the dark about her stalker, but to keep her close to Nathan, they’ve tasked her with investigating the high mortality rate of Nathan’s clients. Despite her distaste for his methods, she finds herself fighting a growing attraction to Nathan, and discovering he’s not a rogue after all forces her to question her own mission. When Faye learns her stalker is another nephilim who intends to use her to breed a new race of hellish beings, teaming up with Nathan may be the only way to prevent a genocide.

Review: After getting over a couple cheesy names (i.e.: Nathan Ink–fallen angel, symbolist and owner of the tattoo parlor Hell’s Leak), I realized that this book actually harbors strong writing, wonderfully flawed characters and an intense plot rife with twists which leave you captivated.  Read more

Devil Without a Cause (Devil’s Bargain, #1) by Terri Garey. © 2011 Avon. ISBN 9780061986390. Mass Media Paperback. Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy. 371 pages. Source: finished copy provided by the publisher.

Falling in love was never part of the bargain, but now that they’ve tasted heaven in each other’s arm’s, can they convince the Devil to give up his due?

Review: Readers of Terri Garey’s Nicki Styx novels will no doubt be familiar with this world and with our Devil—Samuel or Sammy as Lilith calls him but really he goes by a myriad of names …. including the infamous Lucifer and Beelzebub—but this was my first introduction and this book does a brilliant job of hooking you from the beginning. I read it in one night.  Read more

Book Review: Demons Prefer Blondes by Sidney Ayers

Demons Prefer Blondes by Sidney Ayers. © 2011 Sourcebooks Casablanca. ISBN 9781402251740. Mass Market Paperback. Paranormal Romance. 391 pages. Source: ARC provided by the publishers.

Synopsis: When beautiful half-succubus Lucy Gregory’s antique chest unleashes a Pandora’s box of demonic activity in a suburban beauty salon, brooding demon Rafe arrives to run damage control.

Review: An ancient chest opens, unleashing the Inferati and summoning an attractive Paladin demon named Rafael, but this didn’t happen just anywhere. It happened in the middle of Lucy Gregory’s beauty shop. Lucy Gregory, the sassy succubus that is. As this novel is centered around a beauty salon, you can bet it includes tons of girly fun, romance, humor and more.

Don’t be turned off by this being a light romantic and sexy romp though, Ayers has some superb world-building skills and her characters are fantastic–her heroine Lucy Gregory being very approachable and easy to like. To counterbalance Lucy’s insouciance and dynamic, Ayers has created all things serious in Rafael–and in turn a classic account of opposites attract. Read more

Book Review: Raziel by Kristina Douglas

Raziel by Kristina Douglas. © 2011 Pocket Books. ISBN 9781439191927. Mass Media Paperback. Paranormal Romance. 384 pages. Source: review copy provided by the publishers.

Synopsis: “You’re dead” is so not what Allie Watson wants to hear. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like the dark, angelically handsome man who ferried her to this strange, hidden land. The last thing she remembers is stepping off a curb in front of a crosstown bus. Now she’s surrounded by gorgeous fallen angels with an unsettling taste for blood—and they really don’t want her around. Not exactly how she pictured heaven.

Raziel is unsure why he rescued Allie from hellfire against Uriel’s orders, but she stirs in him a longing he hasn’t felt in centuries. Now the Fallen are bracing for the divine wrath brought by his disobedience, and they blame Allie for the ferocious Nephilim clawing at the kingdom’s shrouded gates. Facing impossible odds at every turn, the two must work together to survive. Raziel will do anything to defend his spirited lover against the forces of darkness—because Allie may be the Fallen’s only salvation.

Review: Sadly, this book just didn’t do it for me. I got 83 pages in and just gave up. I felt absolutely nothing for the Raziel and Allie. The only characters I found intriguing were Azazel and Sarah (and I believe the next book in this series, Demon, follows Azazel so I’m definitely interested in checking that one out). I really enjoyed Kristina’s idea of the feral, flesh-eating Nephilim who only come out at night and stalk the fallen angels and I wish that had been enough to make me stick with this but honestly, I wanted to punch both Raziel and Allie too much to make me suck it up. ;)

Book Review: Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #1) by Larissa Ione

Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #1) by Larissa Ione. © 2011 Grand Central Publishing. ISBN 9780446574495. Mass Media Paperback. Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy. 432 pages. Source: purchased.

Synopsis: They are here. They ride. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.

Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can’t—or won’t—understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman’s safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara’s life.

Review: This is the first of the series, but it is tied to the previous series by the author (the Demonica series). The beauty is that you don’t actually need to read the previous serious to understand this one (but I highly recommend it, so read it anyway lol), the author does a great job of giving you the background on characters that came from the previous series.  Read more

Book Review: How to Date a Werewolf by Rose Pressey

How to Date a Werewolf by Rose Pressey. © 2011. eBook. Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance. 86,000 words. Source: eGalley sent in by author

Synopsis: As the owner of Get a Mate Dating Service, Rylie is more than happy to step in and lend a hand to lonely lycanthropic hearts all over town. No matter how hopeless Rylie might be in finding her own soul mate, she has a knack for helping others find theirs. Convinced that she is stuck with a family curse, Rylie is positive she will never find her true love. But when drool-worthy Jack Chandler shows up at her door, Rylie wonders if maybe the curse is finally broken.

But Rylie’s life is about to become complicated courtesy of the after-dark crowd. When she begins receiving strange notes and harassment from a jilted client, events careen out of control. Jack knows she’s more hassle than he can handle. What he doesn’t know is whether she’s seriously in trouble . . . or simply delusional.

Review: This book is a blend of a couple of genres; I’d say it is a mix of romance and urban fantasy. How to Date a Werewolf focuses on Rylie, and her day to day life and job with all that entails, now add to that the fact that she is a werewolf.

It is a lighthearted paranormal story, with elements of danger from an unhappy client who turns into a stalker and romance from Rylie’s attempts at dating the guy next door all mixed in together and it really works. It does however, start out really slow so stick with it, I know I’m glad I did.

I’m giving this a 4/5.

Book Review: Club Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, #3) by Charlaine Harris

Club Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, #3) by Charlaine Harris. © 2003 Ace Books. ISBN 9780441010516. Mass Market Paperback. Paranormal Romance/Mystery. 292 pages. Source: borrowed a copy from my sister.

Synopsis: There’s only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with (at least voluntarily) and that’s Bill. But recently he’s been a little distant – in another state, distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him. Next thing Sookie knows, she is off to Jackson, Mississippi to mingle with the under-underworld at Club Dead. It’s a dangerous little haunt where the elitist vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some type O. But when Sookie finally finds Bill – caught in an act of serious betrayal – she’s not sure whether to save him…or sharpen some stakes.

Review: In my attempt to get some background info while waiting impatiently for the new season of True Blood, I borrowed a couple of the Sookie Stackhouse novels from my little sister.

In this book, Bill takes a trip to Jackson, MS (though he told Sookie it was Seattle) and ends up being held hostage by Mississippi’s vampire king, Russell Edgington and the mysterious Lorena. As Sherriff of Louisiana’s Area 5, Eric is duty-bound to get Bill back but once again needs Sookie’s telepathic abilities in order to do so. Eric charges werewolf Alcide Herveaux with the job of escorting Sookie to Jackson, where both must masquerade as a couple in order to learn more from the patrons of Josephine’s (a.k.a., Club Dead). As you can expect, danger and mystery find Sookie and the shit hits the fan when Bill betrays her.  Read more
